History of the Breed

Malinois is one of the four Belgian Shepherd Dogs. The homeland of these dogs is Belgium, the Flemish region, near Mechelen. The unusual spelling of the breed’s name may have people confused and think that the dog is from France, in fact, it is a Belgian national breed.

First Shepherd dogs appeared in Belgium thanks to the efforts of nature and shepherds. Belgian Shepherd dogs were perfect for the purposes of grazing domestic livestock. Over time, the number of purposes has significantly increased, and now it is well-known as a service dog.

In 1898, the first club for connoisseurs of the breed was established. Surprisingly, the name “Malinois’ was only accepted 20 years after the breeding of Malinois began. Back then, the breed became well-known for its productivity, loyalty, and obedience.
